Yamunotri
Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna River and the seat of the goddess Yamuna, is one of the four sites and starting point in Char Dham pilgrimage. Yamunotri the western most shrine among the Char Dham. Yamunotri is situated at an altitude of 3322 meters on the western flank of Bander Punch peak and reached by a 13 kilometer trek from Hanuman Chatti, the nearest road head. The trek along the river bank is exilerating and picturesque with beautiful views of number of pristine water falls. Horses or palanquins are available on rent for those who are unable to do the trek. The original temple was built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the 19th century. The current temple is of recent origin, as past iterations have been destroyed by the weather and elements. Lodging at the temple itself is limited to a few small ashrams and guesthouses. Ritual duties such as the making and distribution of prasad and the supervision of pujas are performed by the Uniyal family of pujaris (priests). Unique aspects of ritual practice at the site include hot springs Surya Kund where raw rice is cooked and made into prasad.
Sri Someswara Temple at Kharsali is one of the oldest and most exquisite temples of the region and definitely worth giving a visit.
